INTRODUCTION TO FICTION: THE SHORT

Length matters. In our contemporary society, with social media changing the way we read, the short story has become more and more relevant. This course takes an in depth look at short stories, how they function, and how we as writers can develop and master the art of storytelling in a shortened space. We’ll spend time looking at the history of the short story, reading masters of the past, as well as contemporary writers. As well as examining canonical short stories, we’ll also be expanding and diversifying our reading by focusing on more women writers and writers of color. In addition we’ll include works by Pacific Islanders, Asians, Indigenous Americans, and Africans.
